Letters received, 1861-1863.

Most letters in this collection are those received by William Roscoe Livermore from his parents, George Livermore and Elizabeth Cunningham Livermore, while he was studying at West Point Military Academy during the Civil War. George Livermore is best known for his essay "An historical research respecting the opinions of the founders of the Republic, on negroes as slaves, as citizens, and as soldiers" (1862), used by Lincoln in preparing the Emancipation Proclamation. These letters are full of admonishments to William Roscoe Livermore from his parents about the numerous demerits he received while at West Point along with their views on events relating to the Civil War. References are made to George Livermore's scholarly pursuits and how the prominent Bostonian couple is dealing with preparing three sons for war. William's elder brother, Frank Livermore, was appointed as a Medical Cadet in 1862 after completing medical school. Charley Livermore, the youngest, was attending school in Boston during the Civil War. William from his brothers are included in the collection. A few letters received by William from his brothers are included in the collection.
